Ms. Grade was injured in a car accident in Marin County on Jan. 11. She spent several weeks in a hospital before she died there of complications related to her injuries, her brother Matthew Grade, a physician, said. The introverted Ms. Grade acknowledged that she was a most unlikely innkeeper. “If they put me in the front, I would be bad for business,” she said in a 2003 interview with The San Francisco Chronicle. She also admitted that when she opened her inn, Manka’s Inverness Lodge, she didn’t have the first idea about running an establishment.

The Peace Corps, which has repeatedly come under scrutiny for the medical care it provides to volunteers, has agreed to pay $750,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of a 24-year-old volunteer who died of undiagnosed malaria in the island nation of Comoros off the coast of East Africa. The federal government did not admit any guilt or liability in the death of the volunteer, Bernice Heiderman of Inverness, Ill., according to a legal filing on Tuesday in Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The payment is nonetheless unusual. Under federal tort law, suing the government is a complicated and difficult process. Adam Dinnell, a lawyer for the Heiderman family, said he could find no record of any similar monetary settlements by the Peace Corps, a federal agency founded in the 1960s to spread peace and American good will around the world.

The Peace Corps has agreed to pay $750,000 to the family of a 24-year-old volunteer from Illinois who died in 2018 in East Africa after the agency’s doctors misdiagnosed a case of malaria, a law firm announced Tuesday. The doctor told her to drink water and take aspirin, said Dinnell, whose firm filed a federal lawsuit for damages in Chicago on behalf of the Heiderman family. Her daughter had wanted to join the Peace Corps since the time she was in junior high, Heiderman said. The Peace Corps issued a statement saying it “continues to mourn the tragic loss of Volunteer Bernice Heiderman.”“She was a remarkable Volunteer who was admired by her students and community in Comoros. The inspector general's review also found that Heiderman had not been following her required malaria suppression medication regime for several months prior to her death.

CNN —An 18th century bust bought for £5 ($6) nearly 100 years ago by a Scottish town council could sell for more than £2.5 million ($3 million). The bust of landowner and lawmaker John Gordon was sculpted by noted French artist Edmé Bouchardon. Now, local politicians on Invergordon Town Council are weighing up whether to sell the item, described by Sotheby’s as “brilliant in execution,” according to a council report. Despite its illustrious creator, there are few details publicly available about where the bust has been since it was purchased by the council. I found the robes and there was this bust just propping the door open,” she said.

200 volunteers are searching for the Loch Ness monster this weekend. The operation in the Scottish Highlands is the biggest of its kind in 50 years. These are not just people "with binoculars and a tub of sandwiches," insists Paul Nixon, head of Loch Ness Center. The effort is the biggest since 1972, when the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau carried out a study. They somehow became trapped in Loch Ness when a geological rupture cut it off from the sea.

“Monster hunters” from as far away as Japan and New Zealand will be tuning in to livestreams of Scotland’s Loch Ness in the hope of settling a longstanding debate as to whether or not the famed monster, affectionately named Nessie, actually exists. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster dates back to ancient times, though the story really gathered momentum after 1933 when sightings of a “dragon or prehistoric monster” were reported in the Scottish press. Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesNow the interactive attraction has joined forces with Loch Ness Exploration (LNE), an independent and voluntary research team, to scour the waters like never before in the hope of uncovering some answers. Organizers say it is the biggest “surface watch” since the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau (LNIB) studied the Loch in 1972, when volunteers were also on the lookout for the mythical beast – but without the hi tech equipment. “We will certainly have enough eyes on the water – we just need some good spotting conditions,” he added.

The Labor Department reported that U.S. job openings unexpectedly rose in April, pointing to persistent strength in a labor market that suggests pressure on both wages and inflation. Futures traders raised to 70% the probability of a 25 basis points hike at the Fed's June 13-14 policy meeting. FEDWATCHFed Governor and vice chair nominee Philip Jefferson said skipping a rate hike in two weeks would provide policymakers time to see more data before making a decision. I HAVE LONG been of the mind that the harder a place is to reach, the better it must be. That bit of folk wisdom hasn’t always worked to my advantage, but a trip to the west coast of Scotland left me more convinced than ever. The odyssey began at the former fishing village of Badachro, a 70-mile drive west from the city of Inverness. Those driving the scenic North Coast 500 route detour here for elevated pub grub at the Badachro Inn, with its views of Loch Gairloch. He issues each visitor a passport; mine was number 14,933.
